Family Activities
Activity: Invisible ink workshop.
This work shop is an integration lesson between Chemistry, English and Islamic studies to make the workshop more interesting and effective.
Objectives
O-To engage younger students in Art & Design and chemistry using everyday objects.
O-Students will be able to associate their learning with actual experiments.
O- Chemistry and fun become one.
O- Students will do: "Spy tools – Inventing, designing and making)
O- This activity engages students in chemistry – via everyday objects and the
fun of hiding messages.
O- What the Islam religion says towards such spy tools.
O- Learning new words and English expressions.
Aim:
· Motivate and encourage the students to be more reactive with school activities by making some interesting work, which help them in understanding some aspects in real life.
· In this work shop we are relating and matching daily life incidents with the curriculum standards of Supreme Council of Education.
· In this way we are giving chance and motivating slow learners to improve their skills knowledge and give them guidance to apply the new methodology which is learning by doing.
· Allow the students to work in groups, communicate and follow the instructions.
· Students will be able to play the scientists role and encourage building their own personality.
· Integration between different ages, classes and skills will give an excellent value of the work shop and the learning outcomes will reach faster from student to other rather than teacher to student.
Procedure of work
- Using lemon, milk, vinegar and sodium bicarbonate to make visible messages and when the message is dried expose it to heat in order to reveal it.
- Using some chemical reaction in order to write invisible messages.
Use the copper sulfate as 'ink' by applying it to a stick or paintbrush and writing on paper and then the color should be developed by wiping the paper with a cotton containing sodium iodide.
Use the starch as 'ink' by applying it to a stick or paintbrush and writing on paper and then the color should be developed by wiping the paper with a cotton containing iodine.
Use the iron sulfate as 'ink' by applying it to a stick or paintbrush and writing on paper and then the color should be developed by wiping the paper with a cotton containing sodium iodide.
Student's compliments and participation
- Asking if they can make mixtures of lemon and milk to make invisible ink.
- Wearing all safety tools.
- Asking if they can do these experiments at home.
- They are insisting to be participated more in such workshops.
- Asking Islamic studies teacher if this action is forbidden or not.
- Asking the English teacher to give them extra words and expressions to write by the invisible ink.
Special thanks for all chemistry staff teachers, green and red head of families, ICT department and for all unknown soldiers who worked hard to deliver this interesting workshop
